S/4HANA Cloud: An Integral Part of Shell’s Future-Forward Business Transformation and IT Strategy

Sep 18 2018, 8:45 AM Keynote

All Oil & Gas companies innovating with SAP are looking at their strategy to move from ECC to S/4. Being a large, complex company – Shell is taking a long term planning approach, and has concluded that public cloud based platforms will be the norm in only 5-10 years’ time. As a consequence, Shell is configuring a strategy that will exhaust all benefits of the Public Cloud edition of S/4 to definitively transform their business. SAP, Shell, and a consortium of other Oil & Gas companies are actively charting the course to ensure that the Public Cloud variant will become the robust offering suitable for running their businesses. In this session, you will hear more about Shell’s strategy, and where Shell is on their roadmap.

Shaping the Intelligent Energy Enterprise

Sep 18 2018, 9:15 AM Keynote

We are seeing a phenomenon in the Oil & Gas industry where the Digital Era is evolving in the Intelligence Era.  The last nine years of global economic growth has been largely powered by technology – which is tied to record corporate profits and innovative, new business models.   Barriers of entry have been torn down, and fierce competition is at every corner… so much so, that once every two weeks a company is replaced on the S&P 500.  Frankly, the difference between the winners and losers of this reality lies in an organizations ability – and willingness – to embrace intelligent, digital technologies.

In this keynote, you will learn about SAP’s strategy to deliver the Intelligent Energy Enterprise, which will provide a seamless choice of on-premise or cloud delivery mechanisms.  You’ll hear how SAP is collaborating with oil and gas stakeholders to develop industry specific cloud solutions for upstream and downstream, included a customer guest speaker for an inside look.

Key business benefits:

  • Learn the vision of how the Intelligent Energy Enterprise will operate with visibility, focus, and agility to achieve game-changing outcomes
  • Leave with practical next steps to safely navigate this journey

A Culture of Courage: Precision Drilling’s S/4 Transformation Journey

Sep 18 2018, 11:00 AM Track Sessions

The oil and gas industry has been faced with a challenging environment for growth since the downturn in 2014.  Precision Drilling’s leadership team demonstrated great courage and insight during this tough economic period when they decided to invest in technology to improve business processes and technology solutions, during this time of retrenching.  Their goal was to be prepared for when the markets would eventually rebound and oil prices would begin to rise: ready to grow without having to add back the same proportion of employees and assets to manage the rebound.  After 24 months of planning and working with SAP partners, they kicked off the 12-month, S/4 HANA Greenfield & SuccessFactors Employee Central project on April 1, 2017. Go live was a success, exactly 12 months later, on April 1, 2018.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Streamlining operations across the company – putting the right information and technology solutions in the hands of the rig operators;
  • Finance, Supply Chain and EH&S process transformation using SAP best practice S/4 HANA processes;
  • Master Data clean up to enable more accurate and timely reporting and operational decision making;
  • Roll out of Fiori apps on broad scale to improve user experience and solution adoption.

The DL on ML: Assured Quality Through Machine Camaraderie at Devon Energy

Sep 18 2018, 11:00 AM Track Sessions

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Machine Learning (ML) is applied to automate reading physical invoices and appropriately coding in Ariba as part of the AP accounting process. Vendors submit invoices through Ariba. Invoices contain critical fields of information such as: Invoice #, Invoice Date, Location, Cost Object, Line Item Description, etc. OCR tool (ABBYY) is used to read the same information fields from vendor invoices and to later compare to what the vendor keyed into Ariba. ML is used to identify and interpret all the information fields from the many different invoice formats. Once the physical invoice has been processed, the information will be used to identify the correct cost object and cost element for those individual line items. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the final link whereby information will be keyed into Ariba and submitted for review.

Key business benefits:

  • Application of OCR and Machine Learning to read physical invoices
  • Application of RPA to accelerate processing
  • Increased accuracy and speed

WHAT-SAP? For Document Management with Noble Drilling

Sep 18 2018, 11:55 AM Track Sessions

Noble is an offshore drilling contractor. Our Engineering team was keeping drawings, data books, analysis and reports on a server in a myriad of folders. Unless you had access to the server and knew exactly where the document was located, you would have to put in a request with a document controller to retrieve your document. This took time and patience. We needed a database to manage the large volume of drawings, analysis and reports and have that information readily available and retrievable for all SAP users worldwide. After evaluating various systems, we finally embraced Enterprise Content Manager for several reasons:

  • The search engine performs much like Amazon, where you can filter and refine search results based on the content and metadata attached to each document
  • Not only are the documents retrievable by all users, but searches and results are easily shared with embedded links verses large email attachments
  • There is the added benefit of having the same documents available for use and reference by users with different SAP applications in Purchasing, Finance, Maintenance and Operations

We ultimately moved our entire Engineering library to Enterprise Content Manager and now enjoy the benefits listed below.

Key business benefits:

  • Improved efficiency: synergy between departments sharing documents using different SAP applications
  • Time savings: users can quickly search and retrieve documents 24/7, instead of waiting for a document controller to respond
  • Batch upload: large batches of documents can be loaded along with key metadata

Hess Adopts Mobile Warehouse Management to Improve Productivity, Accuracy & User Experience

Sep 18 2018, 11:55 AM Track Sessions

Materials Management processes at Hess Corporation relied on manual entry of material information which increased the possibility of human error and caused bottlenecks across several processes.  Incomplete and manual entries also often resulted in inventory inaccuracies leading to additional material orders, needlessly increasing inventory and needed storage space, unexpected unavailability of materials that interfere with operations and production.

Hess implemented the mInventory mobile warehouse solution that provides a real-time, role-based, and intuitive user interface into SAP to transform how warehouse operators create value for the business. The mobile solution gets paired with rugged barcode scanning peripherals and portable label printers to drive speed and accuracy in data capture and labeling. The digital transformation aimed to enable the workforce to perform their tasks better and easier than before and increase their employee satisfaction.

Key Business Benefits:

  • Over 100% acceleration in Goods Receipt process time and higher data capture accuracy
  • Real-time physical inventory movement visibility in SAP accelerates operational clock speed
  • Improvements in employee satisfaction and reduction in change management costs

Industrial IoT with SAP Leonardo is Changing the Game in Oil & Gas

Sep 18 2018, 2:00 PM Track Sessions

As more and more of the world becomes accustomed to how the Industrial Internet of Things is changing the face of business, we can start looking at more specific examples of what this technology can achieve in Oil & Gas.  Good examples are Touchless Order Processing, and Intelligent Worker Safety.  How will business models change when our tanks on-site across the world take care of re-ordering their own materials?  How will work execution and safety change when we are doing the right things, at the right time, in the right place, with the right kit, with the right credentials, in a safe and reliable way?  In this session, Ken Pierce describes the world of innovation available to Oil & Gas through intelligent application of SAP Leonardo and IIoT technology - beyond predictive maintenance or simple optimization. Join Ken for a high-level discussion on the possibilities of a connected refinery before diving into a real-world case studies including BASF.

Intelligent Automation – Early Application Examples in Upstream E&P

Sep 18 2018, 2:00 PM Track Sessions

Robotic Process Automation and Artificial Intelligence are two mutually exclusive technologies that each have the potential to make a significant impact within the energy industry. The ongoing need for more efficiency and enhanced technology application to drive down costs and increase production volumes has resulted in an environment of innovation. A natural pairing of technologies such as AI and RPA have created opportunities to generate even greater value. This type of partnership allows for the deriving of a solution out of Big Data or IOT using enhanced algorithms that are then passed to an RPA bot to perform the resulting work and capture the value of the aforementioned solution. At Chesapeake Energy, we are still in the early stages when it comes to the application of AI and RPA solutions and are exploring a few different opportunities to pair the technologies together. This session will showcase some of these early ideas such as using machine learning to determine AP invoice coding and then using RPA to code them in SAP and combining big data analytics and RPA to confirm marketing inbound trade confirmations.

Key business benefits:

  • Combining technologies to create more powerful and further reaching solutions
  • Efficient productivity and consistent reliable processing
  • Full automation of a process with both inputs and outputs handled by digital software

Purchase Approvals Made Faster with Fiori at Enable Midstream

Sep 18 2018, 2:55 PM Track Sessions

As a business, we were doing poorly ensuring that requisitions and POs were released in a timely manner. This was a result of too many other obligations that kept people away from their computers. We needed a way to release requisitions/POs that didn’t require the use of a computer. We also did not want users to be required to manage yet another password, as well. We knew that mobility was the answer so we looked to SAP. But not being on HANA, we knew we would be restricted by out-of-the-box apps. For our solution, we are using SAP standard requisition and PO release applications through Fiori. We were able to achieve “single sign-on” and custom workflow was built because we have 8 release levels and 250 approvers. The results from this project: very happy users and shorter procure to pay time.

Key business benefits:

  • Timely release of requisitions and purchase orders
  • Shorter req-to-PO time
  • Not tied to desktop or laptop computer - freedom to travel without worrying

How Delek Accelerated Post-Merger Integration: Successful Playbook

Sep 19 2018, 11:15 AM Track Sessions

Delek’s strategic goal is to double the scale of the organization every three to five years needing technology solutions to integrate businesses rapidly. With the acquisition of Alon USA on July 1, 2017, we met our enterprise strategic goal to double the scale of the organization and began operating at a new scale. The acquisition has opened the door to potential growth, increased synergy and reduced net operational costs. We increased our access to crude oil from Permian Basin in the refining segment, added logistics assets along with approximately 600 convenience stores including company owned stores located in the southwestern region for retail segment.

With the integration of Alon acquisition we captured $89 million of synergies on an annualized basis and on track to reach our goal of $105 to $120 million of annualized synergies.

This project led to faster integration, strategic alignment and mitigated the risk of knowledge going out of the door (knowledge transfer). It created flexibility and adoptability through business processes maintenance, consistency and simplicity by centralized process ownership and ultimately led to cultural and change management.

Key business benefits:

  • Consolidation of ERP systems (four months); reduced cost on system maintenance and licenses
  • One financial system of record and all business operations in one system; all financial reporting out of one system
  • Standardization & consolidation of business processes; closing books in one system

Utilizing Connected Assets to Improve Safety and Operational Integrity

Sep 19 2018, 2:15 PM Track Sessions

To achieve operational excellence, companies need a transformation strategy that empowers cross-functional teams (comprised of IT and OT professionals) to orchestrate change to improve operational performance. The plan they execute needs to align with top business priorities, anchored by performance milestones that have been difficult to attain in the past. Additionally, siloed data sources that provide operational insight are integrated, so that performance improvements and process streamlining contribute to improving operational processes. These are key elements required to really drive transformation for operations.

This presentation discusses the Oil & Gas industry’s digital transformation, focusing on next generation operational excellence and asset performance management. It discusses how technology (including IoT), data, business processes and culture must be considered and rationalized to drive success. By developing an enterprise transformation plan, companies can adjust to dynamic changes occurring in their industry and successfully navigate the hype cycles driven by technology to improve decisions and processes in operations.

Key business benefits:

  • Navigate dynamic enterprise changes
  • Use this approach to reduce risk
  • Enable safe work practices and improve operational visibility, one project at a time

Employee Understanding of “The Big Picture”: Interactions Inside/Outside SAP and Impact at C&J Energy

Sep 19 2018, 2:15 PM Track Sessions

SAP has been live in C&J for about a year and a half, and the biggest challenges we faced was for employees to understand “the big picture” and role in it, interactions inside/outside SAP and the impact it has on their daily activities. SAP is a tool and we must get people, processes and SAP all working together. This required change management across the organization to promote user acceptance/adoption for field workers.

C&J did this by bringing together with a group of Subject Matter experts within the organization committed to help the field; we are customer driven. We work to define the gaps (process, training, role), we provide training resources and support and we monitor progress and provide feedback channels to our executives, technical solution managers and line managers.

The group’s charter is to: standardize processes, expand knowledge of Super Users (field users first line of help) and provide a foundation for accountability and performance.

Key business benefits:

  • Increase knowledge gap
  • Standardize process
  • One-on-ones with users to improve performance

S/4HANA Cloud: An Integral Part of Shell’s Future-Forward Business Transformation and IT Strategy

    • Streamlining operations across the company – putting the right information and technology solutions in the hands of the rig operators;

    • Finance, Supply Chain and EH&S process transformation using SAP best practice S/4 HANA processes;

    • Master Data clean up to enable more accurate and timely reporting and operational decision making;

    • Roll out of Fiori apps on broad scale to improve user experience and solution adoption.

The DL on ML: Assured Quality Through Machine Camaraderie at Devon Energy

Business Process Optimization Using Cloud Based SAP Ariba and SAP ECC

This session will cover the lessons learned from deploying an integrated complex service procurement process by integrating SAP ECC and cloud-based SAP Ariba system. SAP Ariba just introduced complex services procurement in cloud and Devon Energy has been one of the pioneer companies to deploy it and derive benefits from it by integrating it with already existing master data (Vendor master, SAP Contracts etc.) in SAP ECC.

This session will cover master data strategy, different types of SAP & Ariba contracts, POs and invoicing strategies to control the procurement process and tracking expenses of intangible services. Integrations between SAP and Ariba were done to enable the most effective process.

Session attendees will learn how to approach the project, some bottlenecks that may occur and how best to reap benefits from this new technology.

    Key business benefits:

    • Improved services spend control through price compliance, spend visibility, faster invoice processing

    • Integrated master data management across Ariba and SAP ECC

    • Better supplier relationships through improved transparency and controls implemented in SAP Ariba

    • Hear about the roadmap for new innovations around Complex Field Services in Oil & Gas

WHAT-SAP? For Document Management with Noble Drilling

Intelligent Automation – Early Application Examples in Upstream E&P

Purchase Approvals Made Faster with Fiori at Enable Midstream
